Just checking on RVO licensing

Hey Aron,

I thought I read several months ago that at first you had checked to see if it was okay to use the RVO obstacles code as a model for your own RVO implementation – but the creators didn’t respond. Then, later on in the year that they did not give permission yet to use it.

I was just wondering if it’s okay now to use your RVO obstacles code in a commercial project, without having to worry about all that legal stuff? Were you able to get the okay to use? And can I use it in a game that will be sold commercially?

Thanks, and I think your doing a great job, keep up the good work.

I’m going to bump this one. RVO was an integral part of the project I’m currently working on. I’ve been working on other features but It’s getting to the point that I’ll have to try and find a replacement if this isn’t fixed soon?

Well, I found out (from Aron himself) that he is currently still working on getting a license to use it. Luckily, according to Aron, the RVO makers have not directly said “no” yet, and he’s trying to work out an agreement with them that will let us be able to use it. So, there is still hope, but it may not be easy to negotiate. The other party has to agree to let him use it.

I’m hoping they will – otherwise, as you said, I’ll have to find a different local avoidance solution as well. Fingers crossed I guess. But at least he said he’s trying (as of last week, mid-February 2014).

Same for me. Can you give us any news about the RVO feature and general plans for new features, please?

As it is right now, they have not said no, but other things seem to take priority.
Here’s a quote from the latest email.

We are still evaluating licensing options for this technology, but are keeping your interest in mind. Thank you for staying in touch.

I will continue trying, I know a lot of people want this feature.
